Our quick guide to Fanja
Fanja is a nice little town, 30 min drive from Muscat. It is an enjoyable daytrip destination, there are plenty of mudbrick ruins and towers in this area - Oman Observer has an interesting article about them as well.
Here are few recommendations of interesting sites:
- Fanja souq - nice selection of local handcraft items.
- Fanja Fort - if you like mud brick houses, great for roaming around. Nice views as it sits on a hill above town
- Hamim fort - an other mudbrick ruin
- Al Amqat tower - archeological site dating back to the Iron Age.
We also heard that during second Eid their local celebration is absolutely fascinating and worth to visit!
Also there are hiking options as well - see our picks here. And there is the Fanja tabletop hike, which is a longer and more challenging one - you can find description of how to do it here.
Dried fish, yumm!
Al Khatum tower
On the way to Fanja Fort - we did this trip in April last year, it was a bit too warm for that and did not make more photos. But the views were superb!
